Now Access Gmail, Facebook on Cable TV!

There's good news for those who use cable television services. You can now check your mail, watch YouTube videos or connect with friends on Facebook at the regular cable subscription charge of Rs. 150-200 per month.

Logic Eastern, a Noida-based manufacturer of cable infrastructure, has developed special set-top boxes which come with an in-built patented hardware that enables connection to Gmail, Facebook and YouTube. The company has made possible two-way flow of data - from websites to cable operators to consumers and return by using the existing cellphone technology.

The company has installed large servers which download Gmail, YouTube and Facebook pages on behalf of its subscribers and pushes them on to their television screens. For now, consumers can access this service with a special remote control. However the company is developing a wi-fi keyboard that will be given along with the set-top boxes. Also, apart from the remote control, consumers can use their mobile phones to surf channels or access these websites.

Logic Eastern has already deployed 60,000 such set-top boxes across South Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar and Jammu. The company has roped in ICICI as an investor. It has bought a 20 percent stake, which is helping Logic Eastern monetise these services that even existing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) companies and the Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators have not been able to achieve.

"We believe it will be critical for cable operators to differentiate their services by leveraging the massive bandwidth that their cables take to each home. This is something that even DTH cannot do," says Vineet Wadhwa, Chief Technology Officer and Promoter of Logic Eastern. Instead of value-added services, the company prefers to call them 'enhanced services.' But how safe is accessing your email via cable? It is as safe as logging on to the internet on your home computer or laptop, says Wadhwa.

Internet turns 40 Today

On September 2, 1969, two computers at the University of California, Los Angeles, exchanged some data. The exchange was part of the first test of Arpanet, an experimental network for the U.S. Department of Defense. And that exchange of the meaningless data was the beginning of a revolution called Internet that changed the way the world communicated breaking the geographical boundaries.

A few weeks later, on October 29, a connection was established between two sites - the UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California. The next year, that is 1970, Arpanet got the first East Coast node, at Bolt, Beranek and Newman in Cambridge. By then, UC Santa Barbara and University of Utah had also joined the network.

According to a timeline compiled by the Associated Press, listing the key milestones, it was in 1972 that Ray Tomlinson brought e-mail to the network, introducing the "@" symbol to specify addresses from other systems. Then, in 1973, two international nodes were established in England and Norway.

In 1983, a domain name system was proposed, offering '.com' and '.gov', with '.edu' following years later.

In 1989 Quantum Computer Services, now renamed AOL, introduced America Online service for Macintosh and Apple II computers, beginning an expansion that would connect nearly 27 million Americans online by 2002.

But the real explosion in the world of Internet happened in the 1990s, when a British physicist named Tim Berners-Lee introduced the idea for the Web, a way of using the Internet that would allow people to more easily connect and exchange resources across broad expanses. And from there began the real revolution that changed the way we communicated.

Then in 1993, Marc Andreessen and colleagues at University of Illinois created Mosaic, the first Web browser to combine graphics and text on a single page. In 1994 they formed a company to develop the first commercial Web browser, Netscape.

It was this browser that prompted many developers to think of the actual commercial potential of the Web. Then we saw the 'dotcom' boom and the bursting of the bubble.

Then it was a downpour of new concepts. E-mail, online portals, e-papers, social networking sites, blogs, microblogging... you name it. And today Internet is a household word even for the illiterate.

However, despite all the communication revolution, there are fears that the future of Internet's development is not that secure. The fear is mainly due to the openness that has catalyzed innovation and driven its explosive evolution.

"There is more freedom for the typical Internet user to play, to communicate, to shop - more opportunities than ever before," an AP report quoted Jonathan Zittrain, law professor and co-founder of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, as saying.

As net became popular, it became a platform for all sort of activities – political campaign, social networking, rebellion, dictatorship, financial frauds, sex trafficking, porn... Then, exploiting the potential many a virus crept into the cyber space thus threatening the security of online data. It was in 1988 that the Internet worm, Morris, crippled thousands of computers. Today we have more bugs than domains.

There were even arguments that the Web as a medium will kill the print medium very soon. But what is in stock for the net and the print, nobody knows. But one thing is sure whatever we have seen so far is not the last word in this space. Ten years from now, as we celebrate the golden jubilee of the Net, it might have become a totally different concept altogether, translating many of our fantasies into reality!

Google Caffeine

Earlier this month, Google invited the public to take their next generation of web search, code named Caffeine, for a test drive.

According to Matt Cutts of Google, Caffeine is essentially a rewrite of the search index and it roughly compares with the Big Daddy index of late 2005/2006. In other words, it's a BIG change to Google search.

Here's a couple of grabs from Mike McDonald's video interview with Matt Cutts on the subject:

"We're shooting to get results identical to previous version. We'll open up a few datacenters with it first and then roll it out."

"Caffeine will be more powerful, flexible and robust - allowing Google to index faster."

"(Caffeine) builds a powerful foundation for including any changes we want to do with indexing. Not so much for taking advantage of semantic, real-time indexing, but for getting good infrastructure in place for growth and unlock more power."

"Webmasters shouldn't be concerned. Caffeine does not affect your site architecture".

Twitter, Facebook sites are hacked

A hacker attack yesterday shut down the fast-growing messaging service Twitter for hours, while Facebook experienced intermittent access problems.

Twitter Sell Wine Twitter said in its status blog yesterday morning that it was "defending against a denial-ofservice attack," in which hackers command scores of computers to access a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through. Facebook and Twitter have become targets for attacks as their popularity soars. Hackers often target popular sites in an attempt to extort "protection money" from their owners or to make a name for themselves, said Joris Evers, a spokesman for security-software maker McAfee Inc. "This could be for the notoriety of taking down a high-profile Web site like Twitter," Evers said in an interview from Santa Clara, Calif. "It could be for political reasons. Or it could be part of an extortion scam."

McAfee is investigating the Twitter attack, he said.

The fact that a relatively common attack could disable such a well-known Web site shows just how young and vulnerable Twitter still is, even as it quickly becomes a household name.

In Richmond, the Twitter outage was an unwelcome disruption to Kate Hall's daily routine.

"I'm a little bit lost. It's such a habit for me now," said Hall, founder of the online parenting magazine Richmondmom.com. "It's like your morning coffee -- you've got to have it."

Hall said she uses Twitter to keep up with news and the Richmond arts and social scenes.

"I really miss finding out what's going on," she said.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook never became completely inaccessible. Facebook said no user information was at risk. By early afternoon, both seemed to be functioning, though Twitter warned that as it recovers, "users will experience some longer load times and slowness."

LiveJournal, a 10-year-old online diary and blogging site that has waned in popularity in recent years, also was the subject of a denial-of-service attack that lasted about an hour yesterday morning, the company said.

In July, U.S. government and private company Web sites were attacked by unidentified hackers. Sites of the U.S. departments of State, Treasury and Transportation as well NYSE Euronext, the world's largest owner of stock exchanges, were affected.

Twitter, based in San Francisco, drew an estimated 17.6 million users in the U.S. in May, a more than 27-fold increase from a year earlier, according to research firm ComScore Inc. in Reston.

Facebook use cuts Productivity at Work

HOUSTON: Facebook lovers, here is another survey showing how employee productivity is robbed at workplaces. So put a limit on its usage before employers and the bosses put a stop on its usage at work.

While it won't make employers popular, restricting Facebook can reclaim lost productivity.

A new study by Boston IT advisory firm, Nucleus Research finds that, company that allow users to access Facebook in the workplace lose an average 1.5% in total worker productivity.

Nearly half of employees in the recent 'social net-working' study use Facebook during work hours some as much as two hours per day.

The average worker uses it for 15 minutes a day, and most couldn't come up with a legitimate "business reason" for logging on.

The survey of 237 employees also showed that 77% of workers who have a Facebook account use it during work hours.

And "some" employees use the social networking site as much as two hours a day at work, the study found.

Nucleus Research did not say how many workers fit into that category, but did note that one in 33 workers surveyed only used Facebook at work.
